PENCE CALLS ON OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO SUPPORT ELECTIONS IN HONDURAS PDF Print
"A ‘solution' forced upon the Honduran people by outside entities in violation of their own rule of law and democratic processes is unacceptable."

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence participated in a press conference today along with Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Rep. Connie Mack (R-FL), calling on President Obama to support the election process in Honduras:

"Honduras is in a fight for the survival of its democracy and, right now, the United States is on the wrong side of that fight.

"It is becoming increasingly clear what President Obama's foreign policy doctrine will be: a hand of cooperation to our enemies, a cold shoulder to our friends and a blind eye to their struggle for freedom.

"Sadly for the people of Honduras, the Obama Administration has gone one step further: actively supporting the very forces that attempted to trample Honduran democracy.

"It is time for President Obama and this Administration to change course.

"My concern in this Honduran crisis is that it be resolved in a way that is acceptable to the elected representatives of the Honduran National Congress, the Honduran legal system, but most importantly to the Honduran people. A ‘solution' that is forced upon the Honduran people by outside entities, be that the United States or Venezuela, in violation of their own rule of law and democratic processes is unacceptable."

Background:

Congressman Pence signed a letter led by Congressman Schock submitted to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate the involvement of the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and the U.S. State Department in the evolving political situation in Honduras.

Pence is also supporting a letter to the Librarian of Congress in response to a request from Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) that the Law Library of Congress withdraw and "correct" the report on Honduran constitutional issues it released in August. This letter, led by Rep. Ros-Lehtinen, will support the institutional independence and impartiality of the Library of Congress and urge the Librarian of Congress not to allow the Library to be politicized.
